Night Out: Catcher in the Rye
Today I’m talking about Catcher in the Rye, one of my favorite literary themed bars, nestled on Riverside Drive in Toluca Lake. I know it’s not typical to “save” restaurants for certain times of year, but I have to say my favorite time to come here is during the Winter/Christmas season. The whole place looks lovely and festive, with Christmas music playing in the background, my favorite spot is along the wall under the Catcher in the Rye sign, or by the Christmas tree on the couch. The layout of the restaurant feels like a library lounge, with dark wood tables, big chairs, and couches spread throughout the space. They also have a table full of games and you can grab one and bring it to your table to play – everything from Connect 4 to Chutes and Ladders, a super cute touch for your patrons to enjoy.
However, where the restaurant stands out in my opinion is their cocktail menu, which they so aptly call the reading list. Each cocktail, specially curated with a literary theme, and boy do they pack a punch. I’m rounding up my four favorites below:
CATCHER IN THE RYE
Bulleit Rye Whiskey, Cinnamon, Sugar, Bitters
Kraken Rum, Fresh Grapefruit Juice, Lime, Luxardo Liquor
Bird Dog Peach Whiskey, Fresh Lemon Juice, Honey, Mint
STAY GOLD PONYBOY
Buffalo Trace Bourbon, Honey, Fresh Lemon Juice, Rosemary Syrup, Lemon Bitters
The presentation of the cocktails is almost as good as the cocktails themselves – the Stay Gold Ponyboy comes with a lit rosemary branch sticking out of it! See it pictured above!
Now, onto the star of the dinner menu. The Not Your Mom's Grilled Cheese & Soup. I am not kidding you guys, this is the best grilled cheese and tomato soup combo I have ever had. I look forward to coming here just for this dish, and this dish alone. In fact, I have never even tried another one of their entrees. The grilled cheese is a blend of mozzarella, provolone and parmesan pesto, on parmesan crusted bread, served with a roasted tomato bisque that has just the right amount of spice. The PERFECT cozy winter meal by a Christmas tree.
Catcher in the Rye has great atmosphere and I would highly recommend checking them out!
