Sunset Sips at the Santa Barbara Zoo
So it has been a while since my last post, apologies, life and work have a way of getting in the way of hobbies! But I am back and today I am going to be recapping an awesome event I attended recently at the Santa Barbara Zoo called Sunset Sips. A few weeks ago, we hopped in the car and made our way up to Santa Barbara on a Thursday afternoon. We checked in at the front to get our VIP wristbands, and upon entry were given our branded “Sunset Sips” wine glasses. This private event takes place in the center of the zoo on a large grassy area, and features numerous booths where you can wine taste, get small bites of food from local vendors, taste some new kinds of hard cider and more. They also had a separate food buffet where you could make a plate full of appetizers while you made your way around the booths.
The food was great, and they had a perfect variety of meats, cheeses, crackers, fruit and olives. We grabbed a high top table and took in the view, before visiting the booths. We hit the Roark Wine Company, Common Cider Company and Vida Natural Baking Co. first to sample their offerings. Then it was time to do some exploring, which was my favorite part. You have free reign of the whole zoo during this event. You can take your glass of wine and stroll down to visit the lions, go check in on the penguins and see all that the zoo has to offer. We took full advantage of this and walked almost the whole property in between our wine and cider tastings. Then it was time to head back to try out the Sevtap Winery, Pence Wines and Hippy Pop Popcorn offerings. I was so pleasantly surprised by the variety and the amount offered for this event. We got generous pours from every winery and cider company, and visited some of them several times to try the different varietals they brought.
Now onto my favorite part. Your ticket includes a complimentary giraffe feeding! In my many years of visiting the Santa Barbara Zoo and others, I had never done the giraffe feeding, so this was an incredible treat! We made our way down to the giraffe feeding area, and quickly got in line. The staff was great at keeping the line organized and ensuring you got the appropriate time with the giraffe when it was your turn. We got the BEST photos! It’s something I will not soon forget.
After our giraffe excursion, we headed back to get one final glass of something, and opted for another glass of cider from the Common Cider Company. They were hands down my favorite vendor from the event! I will definitely be buying some of their product to have on hand at home, especially for those hot summer days by the pool!
Our last stop, with a glass of cider in hand, was the train. We boarded right as the sun was setting, which made for a great final piece of the event. The tour takes you all around the zoo, so you can see everything from a different perspective. The views from the Santa Barbara Zoo are just lovely too, so there was so much to take in and enjoy.
After this, it was time to head out, but we were craving Mexican food and decided to drive just a few short minutes over to one of our favorite spots on State St, Casa Blanca mexican restaurant. We got a giant steak quesadilla to share and the margarita flight, which was the perfect way to end a wonderful evening in Santa Barbara. I highly recommend Casa Blanca, they have a great outdoor patio, and the margarita flight is the best on a cool summer evening outdoors!
